Knapp-Felt was a men’s hat company that had excellent print ads in the 1920s-30s. Here, I recreated one through block printing.
This is a reduction block print where, instead of using one block of linoleum, multiple trimmings of linoleum were joined and carved. Following that, some of the prints are printed on joined trimmings of black and white paper.
A reduction block print is a multi-colored print made by carving and printing the same block of linoleum multiple times - the block is "reduced" after each color is printed.
With reduction printing, one cannot make more prints later as the sole block is all but destroyed by the end of the process.
Check out some examples of the process in the How It’s Made section.
